"How do I keep my leather looking beautiful?"

How to Care for Italian Leather So It Lasts for Years

One of the questions we hear most often is:

"How do I keep my leather looking beautiful?"

And our honest answer is always the same.

Don't try to keep it perfect.

Good Italian leather isn’t meant to sit untouched in a cupboard. It’s made to be used, carried, travelled with and lived in. The beauty of leather comes from how it changes over time.

In fact, many people do too much when it comes to leather care.

Quality leather doesn’t need constant treatments or complicated routines. It simply needs a little attention and the freedom to age naturally.

Leather Is Meant to Be Used

We completely understand the feeling.

You invest in a beautiful handmade leather bag and suddenly you’re nervous about putting it down, wearing it out or taking it on a busy day.

But here’s what we always tell our customers:

Use it.

Leather actually improves with use. It softens, becomes more comfortable and develops a rich patina that makes it uniquely yours.

Marks, creases and subtle colour changes are not damage.

They’re part of the story.

They’re what turn a new piece into something personal.

Are Marks and Colour Changes Normal?

Yes, completely.

Natural leather will change over time. You might notice:

  • Slight darkening in areas you touch often
  • Soft creases where the leather bends
  • Small marks from everyday use

These are all part of the character of the leather.

We see them as signs that the piece is being enjoyed, not something to worry about.

The Simple Care We Recommend

A soft cloth or brush is usually enough to remove dust and dirt.

There’s no need for frequent deep cleaning. Gentle and occasional is best.

What If It Gets Wet

This is one of the most common concerns.

If your leather bag gets caught in the rain:

Gently blot away excess water with a soft microfiber cloth as soon as possible.

Let it air dry naturally at room temperature

Avoid heat sources like radiators, hairdryers or direct sunlight

Leather can handle a bit of water. The key is not to panic and not to force it to dry too quickly.

Conditioning

Leather can dry out over time, especially if used regularly.

We usually suggest conditioning every few months, depending on how often you use the piece.

Use a good-quality leather conditioner and always test it first on a hidden area before applying it more widely.

A little goes a long way.

What to Do / What Not to Do

We find this is often the easiest way to think about leather care.

What to Do

Use your leather regularly

Wipe it gently with a soft cloth when needed

Let it dry naturally if it gets wet

Condition occasionally to keep it supple

What Not to Do

Don’t use harsh cleaning products or household chemicals

Don’t apply anything without testing it first in a hidden area

Don’t use heat to dry leather

Don’t over-condition or over-treat it

Don’t expect it to stay looking brand new forever

What About Stains?

If something spills, it’s best to act gently and quickly.

Blot (don’t rub) the area with a clean cloth.

We generally recommend avoiding home remedies unless you’re confident, as some can do more harm than good. If you do try anything, including advice in this article always test it first in a hidden area.

For more stubborn stains, it’s often safer to seek professional leather cleaning advice rather than experimenting.

Organic stains from food can often be removed with chalk powder. Crush white chalk, let it sit on the stain overnight and dust it off with a clean cloth. Please note Waxes or silicone products clog up leather pores and may render them unable to be cleaned in the future.

What Products Should You Avoid?

This is important.

Avoid products that aren’t specifically designed for leather, especially anything with strong chemicals, silicone or heavy waxes.

These can block the natural pores of the leather and affect how it ages.

When in doubt, keep it simple and always test first.

How Should You Store Leather?

If you’re not using your bag for a while:

Store it in a breathable dust bag (not plastic)

Keep it in a cool, dry place

Avoid direct sunlight for long periods

Lightly stuff it to help maintain its shape

But most importantly, don’t store it away for too long.

Leather is happiest when it’s being used.

The Real Secret

The most beautiful leather pieces we’ve ever seen weren’t the newest ones.

They were the ones that had been used for years.

The bags that had travelled.

The ones that had softened, darkened slightly and developed character.

That’s what makes leather special.

It doesn’t stay the same.

It becomes better.
